IBTC Roundtable Summary from the Argus European Carbon Carbon Markets Conference 2025

Scaling Circular Biocarbon for a Competitive and Climate-Neutral Europe

Final Roundtable | Argus Carbon Europe Conference 2025 | May 14 | Nice

At the International Biomass Torrefaction and Carbonisation Council (IBTC), we were proud to co-host the final session of this year’s Argus Carbon Europe Conference—a high-level roundtable on the role of biochar and biocarbon in Europe’s climate, energy, and industrial policy.

The session was hosted by Erisa Senerdem and opened by our General Secretary Lisa Schmidt, and featured an insightful keynote by Philipp D. Hauser, who highlighted the strategic importance of circular biocarbon and biochar solutions that are immediately available, scalable, and cost-effective.

What made this roundtable truly special was the diversity of the participants:
🌱 Project developers from across Europe and North America
🏭 Industry voices from metallurgy and advanced biomass
💸 Carbon market investors and removal specialists
📰 Journalists and analysts from policy and energy sectors

Together, we explored critical questions:
🔹 How do biochar and biocarbon complement each other to achieve both carbon removal and emission reduction at scale?

🔹 How can the European CRCF and the EUETS evolve and integrate to ensure that circular biocarbon delivers on its promises?

🔹 What’s the real biomass potential, and how can better forest and land management support carbon goals all while supporting the timber industry?

🔹 How do we ensure sustainability and system integration—using clean pyrolytic technologies, leveraging power & heat co-generation, and driving cascading use of biomass?

💡 A key insight: poly-generation plants—producing carbon first, then energy—are a tangible example for the cascading use of biomass and the key to sustainable development in rural and industrial regions.

We closed the discussion by asking participants:
“What is the most important lever—regulatory, financial, or technical—to unlock the full potential of renewable carbon in Europe?”
Their answers were as diverse as the panel itself: market visibility, cross-policy coherence, investor confidence, and fair access to carbon markets that value Biochar Carbon Removal Results and its co-benefits .

We are grateful to Argus Media for the platform, and to all our contributors for their inspiring inputs. This session made it clear:
➡️ Biochar and biocarbon are no longer marginal solutions—they are central to Europe’s sustainable industrial future.

Shaping the Future of
Renewable Carbon. Together.
