In 2026, the International Marine Organization (IMO) made amendments which now classify charcoal/biochar as a Dangerous Good at sea. What does this mean for the biochar sector? This session explores the new guidelines, why they were introduced, their implications for safe transport and share insight to understanding biochar's self-heating properties.

The Summit will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 10–11 June 2026.
This year’s focus is on Renewable Carbon for a Circular Economy in Industrial and Environmental Solutions. Across two days, the programme will explore how biochar and pyrolysis can move from innovation to industrial integration, with discussions on metallurgical applications, safety and shipping regulations, markets and project development, sewage sludge and wastewater treatment, construction materials, and more. The Summit will also look at the role of pyrolysis units as integrated biorefineries, enabling the high-value circular use of biomass residues by concentrating carbon into solid, liquid and gaseous fractions.
